VJCP529-FBB – Flexible Instrumentation Jazz Ensemble Chart, which has been written to sound complete with as few as 11 pieces or as many as a full (18-piece) big band. The instrumentation is as follows:
Alto Sax I, Alto Sax II, Tenor Sax I, Tenor Sax II (opt.), Baritone Sax (opt.)
Trumpet I, Trumpet II, Trumpet III, Trumpet IV (opt.)
Trombone I, Trombone II, Trombone III (opt.), Bass Trombone (IV) (opt.)
Guitar (opt.), Piano, Bass, Drums, Vibraphone (opt.)
Description: Holy, Holy, Holy is a beautiful hymn from the liturgical repertoire. This arrangement, by jazz guitarist/composer Tom Wolfe, opens with a chamber ensemble rendition of the hymn. This quickly gives way to a new version in which the hymn is recast as a jazz waltz.
After the melodic statement in 3/4 (performed by a mixed group of instruments), space is provided for a trumpet soloist to improvise. After the solo, the ensemble plays an exciting interlude, with tension and intensity building over a pedal point. This leads to a soli featuring the ensemble’s lower voices (baritone sax, trombones, bass), giving them a wonderful opportunity to shine!
As the chart approaches its inspiring conclusion, the hymn melody reappears, first with a tenor sax and piano duo, then a broader ensemble passage, and finally with a return of the chorale-style approach first heard in the introduction.
This big band arrangement is of intermediate-to-advanced difficulty.
