VJCP507-BB – Jazz Ensemble Chart, written for the full, traditional big band line-up (17-18 performers). The instrumentation is as follows:
Alto Sax I, Alto Sax II, Tenor Sax I, Tenor Sax II, Baritone Sax
Trumpet I, Trumpet II, Trumpet III, Trumpet IV
Trombone I, Trombone II, Trombone III, Bass Trombone (IV)
Guitar, Piano, Bass, Drums, Vibraphone (opt.)
Description: Echoes in the Hills is a light swing chart based on the chord progression to Cole Porter's I Love You. The composition, by jazz educator/performer Tom Wolfe, has been reharmonized and also features dominant pedal points. The melody features the Alto Sax I, Trumpet II, Trombone I, and (optional ) Vibraphone parts. Solos are in those same Alto Sax I, Trumpet II, and Trombone I parts. After solos, the saxes are featured in a sax soli which then leads to a final shout chorus with the brass and sax sections together. After solos, there is a sax soli and a concluding tutti ensemble chorus. Then the piece returns to the melody, ending with a gentle fade out of collective improvisation from the ensemble, creating those “Echoes in the Hills”.
This arrangement can be performed at the suggested tempo, but works well at both slower and slightly faster tempi. The groove itself should reflect swing feel in four, but with an implied feeling of two during the first half of the melody.
This big band arrangement is of intermediate-to-advanced difficulty.
